ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn Certified Online Teacher

The ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn Certified Online Teacher distinction recognizes faculty who have completed training on current online teaching methodologies, pedagogies, and tools in order to prepare them to deliver quality online and hybrid courses. Faculty can earn the ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn Certified Online Teacher distinction through either the Workshop Series or Portfolio.

Prior to enrolling in training, faculty must obtain department head approval. This endorsement confirms that the faculty member will be teaching online or hybrid courses for the university, and must be on file with the Office of Distance Learning before the faculty member can be registered. 

Workshop Series 

Step 1: Complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (QM) workshop (and all subsequent refreshers). 

Step 2: Complete three online workshops from our catalog of Professional Development Courses: ODL 100 Moodle Basic Training + ODL 210 Beyond Design: Strategies for Online Course Delivery + one elective (ODL 100 or 200 level). 

Faculty must turn in copies of certificates of completion for all workshops in order to earn ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn Certified Online Teacher recognition. 

Portfolio 

Ideal for faculty who have completed training to teach online at another institution or through another organization, the "Portfolio" option includes two steps. 

Step 1: Complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (QM) workshop (and all subsequent refreshers). 

Step 2: Submit an electronic portfolio using the Portfolio Checklist – Online Teacher provided by the Office of Distance Learning. The final portfolio will include a narrative demonstrating how your training history and prior experiences relate to your qualifications as an online teacher, and documentation of successful completion from prior training, workshops, or experiences.

Temporary Certification

While all faculty teaching online must hold one of the ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn Certifications, a temporary certification may be granted for one semester only. The Temporary Certification involves completing ODL 100: Moodle Basic Training, with an intention to complete the remaining certification requirements the following semester. Department heads may discuss this option with the Office of Distance Learning.

Requirements

Faculty assigned to teach online or hybrid courses at ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½ Lafayette must hold a certification as either ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn Certified Online Teacher or ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn Certified Course Designer. Faculty who are assigned to deliver online or hybrid courses must obtain department head approval prior to completing the requirements for ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn certification. This endorsement confirms that the faculty member will be teaching online or hybrid courses for the university, and it must be on file with the Office of Distance Learning before the faculty member can be registered.

Permanent adjuncts, those who have a consistent presence in the department and teach online or hybrid courses each semester or at consistent intervals, must complete the same training and certification as full-time faculty. Adjuncts who are assigned to deliver online or hybrid courses must obtain department head approval prior to completing the requirements for ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½earn certification. 

Teaching Assistants (TA) / Graduate Assistants (GA) must complete certification only if they are teaching a model course designed by a certified faculty member. The department head or graduate program coordinator must provide endorsement for participation in the training. The TA/GA will complete three online workshops from our catalog of Professional Development Courses: ODL 100: Moodle Basic Training + one facilitated workshop (200 level) + one additional workshop (100 or 200 level).
