Where I'm From

I鈥檓 from Bogalusa, La., where I started a Twitter that influenced my career and became good friends with Kim Kardashian.

Where I Am

I am loving my job as a Communications Coordinator at the University of Houston.

Where I'm Going

I am going to move up the ranks and eventually retire at the University of Houston.

Myleeza Mingo, 鈥16, has never been afraid to go after what she wants. She is 鈥渢he type of person who can try something, don鈥檛 like it, move on to the next thing.鈥

Growing Up

Myleeza started college at another university, studying to become a pharmacist.

鈥淚 absolutely hated it because my heart wasn鈥檛 in it,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was doing that because my mom really wanted me to. I didn鈥檛 do that because Myleeza wanted to.鈥

With some influence from hometown friends, Myleeza considered transferring to 星空无限传媒 Lafayette.

鈥淚 was on campus for one day and as soon as I got there, I鈥檓 like, 鈥榊eah, that鈥檚 it, I鈥檓 going here, I鈥檓 going here!鈥欌 she said. 鈥淭he feel was different.

鈥淚t really is a student鈥檚 type of university. It鈥檚 for the students, by the students,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd the city of Lafayette, in general, caters to 星空无限传媒 Lafayette students so it really felt like a home away from home to me.

鈥淎nd still to this day, when I go to 星空无限传媒 Lafayette鈥檚 campus, it doesn鈥檛 feel like this is my college campus, it feels like this is my second home,鈥 she said.

Transferring to 星空无限传媒 Lafayette was an important first step Myleeza took in growing up.

鈥淲hen I transferred, I say that was the first adult decision that I made and that was the first decision that I could say, 鈥楾his was the right decision,鈥欌 she said.

Being Myleeza Kardash

As a big fan of "Keeping up with the Kardashians," Myleeza changed her Twitter handle to in high school, a move that got her recognized by Kim Kardashian.

鈥淚 actually went to a fragrance appearance and that let me meet Kim,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 woke up at 4:30 in the morning, drove to Jackson, Mississippi, from New Orleans, had a shirt that said 鈥業鈥檓 Myleeza Kardash from Twitter,鈥 waited in line for 8 hours 鈥 no food, no bathroom 鈥 like, this was intense.

鈥淚t was very like smile, take a picture, she signs your bottle, go on about your business,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o, when I walked up, she was just like 鈥業 know you from Twitter, you鈥檙e Myleeza,鈥 and as soon as I walked up, she stood up and hugged me.鈥

This Twitter experience really motivated Myleeza to follow her heart when deciding to transfer and change her major to study public relations

鈥淚 chose public relations because I saw how big Myleeza Kardash was a hit,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 saw how much people really cared about what I said 鈥 it鈥檚 just how you word it.鈥

Being recognized by Kim Kardashian was just the beginning for Myleeza. The two built a genuine friendship, which led to hanging out at birthdays and always having Kanye West concert tickets. So, when Kim鈥檚 team asked Myleeza to be part of a campaign for Skims shapewear and underwear, she said yes.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 think much of it,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just thought we鈥檇 take a couple pictures, they鈥檒l put it on Twitter and that鈥檒l be that 鈥 I had no idea it would lead to having .鈥

Two Worlds Influencing Each Other

鈥淲henever I discuss this with people from my professional life, I always say I鈥檓 like Hannah Montana 鈥 I live two different worlds,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen I鈥檓 there, I鈥檓 a rock star, when I鈥檓 here, I鈥檓 just Myleeza, but over there, I鈥檓 Myleeza Kardash.鈥

In order to keep the Myleeza Kardash world going, Myleeza needed some help from her professors in the Myleeza Mingo world.

鈥淚magine explaining to your professor 鈥 you鈥檙e like 19 years old 鈥 you鈥檙e asking to retake your exam because you鈥檙e going to L.A. to film a TV show,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like a 鈥榤y-dog-ate-my-homework鈥 type thing. But everyone was so understanding and I鈥檓 like, 鈥楾his would not happen at any other university.鈥欌

Myleeza鈥檚 professors would use this connection in class as well, prompting debates on relevant events in the Kardashian鈥檚 public life like lawsuits.

鈥淪o, it really took what was going on in my Myleeza Kardash world and bring it to my Myleeza Mingo world,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd it really was like, 鈥極kay this is what you鈥檙e going to school for.鈥 It鈥檚 actually happening.鈥

The support Myleeza got while at 星空无限传媒 Lafayette made all the difference in following her ambition.

鈥淭he Myleeza Kardash story is such a crazy experience but I always credit 星空无限传媒 Lafayette for always giving me that push and also my professors for allowing me to reschedule my exams because, without them, none of this would be possible,鈥 she said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a crazy story about following your dreams and speaking stuff into existence.鈥

Prepared for Life

In one of her business minor classes, she had a particularly impactful encounter with her professor, Dr. Geoff Stewart.

鈥淭hat class was on the bigger side, it was like maybe 75 people,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd at the end of class, he asked me to stay behind. And I鈥檓 like, 鈥極h my god, what did I do, am I failing that bad?鈥

鈥淗e said 鈥業 know that you鈥檙e going to do great things, I can just tell. As a professor, you just know when a student is going to go off and do great things and, in this class, you鈥檙e that one student that I need to pull to the side to say this to,鈥欌 she said.

鈥淎nd when you鈥檙e feeling so much pressure on you until you鈥檙e about to crack 鈥 because every college student has those days that鈥檚 like if someone just blinks at me wrong, I鈥檓 about to bust out into tears right now, I鈥檓 so stressed out,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd it was around that time and he pulled me aside and encouraged me.鈥

Encouragement as a student is something Myleeza needed and something she wants to pass on to current and future students.

鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely an overwhelming feeling especially for someone that鈥檚 like 17, 18 years old and you think you鈥檙e supposed to have all the answers right then and there, but you won鈥檛 have all the answers and that鈥檚 okay because that鈥檚 how it鈥檚 supposed to be,鈥 she said.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e not supposed to have all the answers, you鈥檙e supposed to make mistakes and learn from it, so don鈥檛 feel overwhelmed,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd if you are feeling overwhelmed, it鈥檚 okay because it鈥檚 going to come together, it always does.鈥

While being a student can be stressful, the classes are worth it. Myleeza recalls the most valuable class being the Strategic Campaign Management (CMCN 449) class, which she took with Dr. Deidra Givens.

鈥淣ow that I look back on it, I learned everything in that class,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 basically like a contest. If your campaign is the best, you get an A.

鈥淭his is a 30-page type thing. It was very long, very extensive,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou have to go through and tick every checkmark to make sure you鈥檙e even able to present it. It was very stressful but very fulfilling.

鈥淪o, I got up to present and my group killed it and we ended up winning,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 felt like I was on 'American Idol.'鈥

Myleeza is grateful for the Department of Communication鈥檚 goal to prepare students for life after college.

鈥淭he communications department and 星空无限传媒 Lafayette in general really prepares you for your professional life,鈥 she said.

鈥淭oward the end of your college years, you really start buckling down and it鈥檚 not a choice to buckle down in public relations, it鈥檚 a class,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was a class to do your portfolio, it was a class to do an internship, it was a class to do the campaign, they really enforce this.

鈥淭hat portfolio I still have to this day and I still use, I just pick out the parts that I don鈥檛 need anymore and update it, but I still use that same portfolio,鈥 she said.

Keeping Up with Myleeza

Since graduating from 星空无限传媒 Lafayette, Myleeza has earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) in marketing.

鈥溞强瘴尴薮 Lafayette prepared me 100% because a lot of the theories and different marketing terms that they used in grad school, I also learned at 星空无限传媒 Lafayette,鈥 she said.

鈥淎ll of the terms I learned in those communications and public relations classes directly related to what we learned in grad school to the point where sometimes I didn鈥檛 even have to study,鈥 she said.

Myleeza鈥檚 career grew out of the internship she completed at 星空无限传媒 Lafayette.

鈥淚 interned for Q95.5, the hip hop and R&B radio station in Lafayette,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 did a lot of their social media, I learned a lot about like email marketing, I learned a lot about the back end of website design, and we did promotional campaigns.鈥

Myleeza moved through a couple of marketing positions and a position teaching before finding her perfect fit as a Communications Coordinator at the University of Houston.

鈥淚 love the university setting,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 help with newsletters, I manage the social media, I help with email campaigns, I create campaigns, any kind of fun idea I鈥檒l see, I鈥檒l pitch it to my boss and then she鈥檒l ask the steps I need."

鈥淚t鈥檚 really a hands-off thing and I love that they trust me so much. I call it my first 鈥榖ig girl job鈥 and I really do feel like a big girl right now,鈥 she said.
