In 1982, 60 Minutes topped television charts, lobster bisque was a trending food must-have, a dozen eggs cost a mere 79 cents 鈥 and, perhaps most notably, the Vermilion Parish Ragin鈥 Cajun Club was born.
The club will commemorate its 40th anniversary on April 22 with a special event at Southern Oaks Country Club in Abbeville. Details will be shared on the Alumni Association website as they become available.
Since the charter signing on November 15, 1982, the Vermilion Parish Ragin鈥 Cajun Club has become recognized as one of the University鈥檚 oldest and largest Ragin鈥 Cajun Clubs. What began as 鈥渁n opportunity to get involved with the University," said alumna and initial club member Theresa Gaspard, has fostered many alumni volunteers and past Alumni Association presidents.
John T. Landry, the club鈥檚 inaugural president, is still involved today. He recalls that Dr. Joseph Savoie, the current University president who was then serving as the director of the Alumni Association, reached out to Landry for help. 鈥淸Dr. Savoie] kept asking me to start a club and to try and get something going," Landy said.
Landry called an initial meeting in Abbeville for alumni interested in joining the new club 鈥 and the rest is a history of memories and friendships 40 years in the making.
